Nanaya- 7 Levels of Ice Cream Review
Claimed to be the world's richest matcha ice cream, I must say... I can't disagree with that. Serving 7 different levels of matcha ice cream with ascending intensities, this is one matcha paradise. I got the level 3 and 5 ice cream and I loved it! The ice cream was creamy, rich and not overpoweringly bitter. As a matcha fan myself, level 5 was definitely my choice of the two. It still had a tinge of sweetness to it with an addictive bitterness. I will definitely recommend level 5 (try level 6-7 if you're feeling adventurous!) for all you matcha addicts who enjoy the bitterness and seaweedy flavors of matcha. On the other hand, level 1-3 is a good start for people who is not too much of a matcha fan as it was mainly sweet but carried a subtle bitterness.
Other than the 7 levels of matcha ice cream, there were also other flavours such as azuki, hojicha, black sesame and strawberry which are equally as popular as the matcha ice creams. I went around 3pm in the afternoon and many flavours were already sold out so be sure to head there earlier if the other flavours are what you are interested in trying.
Level 1-6 ice creams are all priced at 340 yen (~$4.20sgd) for a scoop and 360 yen (~$4.40sgd) for a scoop in a cone. On the other hand, level 7 ice creams are priced at 530 yen (~$6.50sgd) for a scoop and 550 yen ($6.70sgd) for a scoop in a cone. An additional scoop will cost 100 yen more (~$1.20) which is definitely the option I would recommend.
Verdict:
Having tried many gelatos in my lifetime, I must say this was amazing and lived up to its hype. Only a stone's throw away from Sensoji Temple (which is a highly recommended tourist attraction to visit when in Tokyo as well), Nanaya is conveniently located and has a bus stop situated right infront of its shop that has direct access to tokyo skytree. Not only do they sell ice creams, they do have matcha powders, green teas, matcha chocolate etc which are of premium quality at affordable prices. Nanaya is definitely a must-try for matcha lovers when you're in Tokyo!
